Field Finds | The Start of Something
Those who know me well, know that I’m a bit of a nightmare to go anywhere with. A 100m stretch that would normally take 1 minute to wander, can turn into a 20 minute, multiple stop photoshoot as I capture my daily inspiration - typography on old flakey shopfront, tiling up the side of a building, a colour combo that reminds me of my favourite icecream flavours, the way a weed is sprouting up through the pavement, or the shadows cast by a line up of bicycles.
I’ve always had a fascination with these mundane aspects of life. A fascination for the scrappy sidewalks, the untamed flora, patterns, and the unintentional colour palettes surrounding us - the things that I think go unnoticed by 99.9% of people. People who’ve got better things to do than A) stopping every 5 seconds to photograph a brick wall, and B) going home to file it into their digital folder system of inspiration imagery.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m weird for seeing all this stuff, and actually thinking it is interesting. But after spending 2 seconds agonising over my potential craziness, usually I manage convince myself that I have magical creative super powers and if noticing this stuff makes me happy then I may as well embrace it.
Those who have travelled with me, know that I especially get trigger happy when I’m out of my everyday - when the environment around me is different to what I’m used to, and ESPECIALLY when the signs are in a different language. Or if I find an archway. Bloody love an arch.
So, since there’s definitely no travel to places where I don’t understand the street signs happening anytime soon, I thought I’d start sharing with you the little snippets of my self-isolation daily life and locale that inspire me enough to stop and take note. Usually it’ll be on my iPhone, and occasionally on my proper camera, if I’m feeling really inspired. Maybe these will from my morning run, or on my walk to the supermarket, or maybe I’ll just go wandering around my house in my slippers in search of inspiration.
I’m calling it “Field Finds”, and I think it’s going to become a bit of a regular thing, even beyond this Self Isolation situation. Think of it as a way to see inside my brain, see where I get my inspiration from, and what makes me tick.
Here's today's Field Finds - iso day #3, on my morning run. Enjoy.
