Iso Day 19

Wandering around my Auckland neighbourhood over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been noticing a new kind of art. A low-fi art form that seems to be gaining renewed popularity. One that is inexpensive, has low barriers to entry, and is accessible to any age.

I like to call it ‘Footpath Musings’.

Every time I come across one of these mini artworks, I can’t help but smile. Here are kids and adults alike, creating an open-air, temporary exhibition - and unintentionally recording this historic time and our collective predicament. 

Whether they portray messages of support or a childhood game, these unintentional artworks share commonalities: pastel colours, imperfection, simplicity.

They evoke a sense of nostalgia of the good old days. Times when toilet rolls and colourful pipe cleaners entertained us. When we played on car-free streets. When we knew our neighbours and shared resources. Just a few months ago, it seemed like those times were gone for good. But I like to think that this renewed sense of community spirit and the new-good old days will be here to stay, even when we’re done with Covid and lockdowns. Collectively, I think we’re seeing a shift in mindsets. We’re starting to realise what is really important in life and on this incredible planet. Supporting each other, slowing down, and enjoying the simple things.
