is a multi-disclipinary designer and artist based in Wairarapa, New Zealand, with a love of colour, pattern, texture and traditional craft.
Kate is one of six designers competing on the new television series ‘Design Junkies’, premiering on TV 1 in May 2018. The show celebrates New Zealanders' love of DIY, innovation, and up-cycling; challenging the designers to transform junk into treasure under extreme time pressure and constraints.
Kate graduated from Massey University Wellington in 2010 with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) majoring in Industrial Design, and subsequently from the University of Canterbury in 2011 with a Masters in Engineering Management (MEM), in which she explored the role that design and innovation play in business. Kate's Industrial Design experience includes designing bespoke aircraft interior furniture such as Business Class bar units for international airlines, working alongside Boeing on new aircraft interior development programmes, and furniture design and buying for a major wholesaler in Vancouver, Canada. She also undertakes branding and graphic design for new and existing businesses.
Kate's background in multiple creative disciplines and belief in collaboration enables her to approach design projects with a holistic vision and develop cohesive, integrated design solutions. As an artist and a designer, Kate's work explores the relationship and tension between the two fields. By aligning aesthetics, functionality, user-experience, craftsmanship and business values, she delivers results that not only look good, but outshine the status quo.
Growing up on a Wairarapa farm, the natural environment is a constant source of inspiration for Kate, as well as the diverse cultures she experiences during her global travels. Kate exhibits her work locally, and produces commissions for her art and design for both local and international clients. She loves to work with like-minded people, so if it's an artwork you'd like commissioned, a challenge you need help solving, or an opportunity to collaborate, get in touch!
